Reading a compliance heatmap
Compliance isn't evenly distributed. Within a single county, the cities where a trade clusters can look very different on bonding, workers' compensation, and tenure. The heatmap makes that visible at a glance: big bubbles are where the contractors are, and the color tells you how well-documented that city's group is on the metric you selected.
Switch the metric, not the data
The same set of cities recolors as you toggle between bonding rate, active workers' comp rate, median tenure, and the overall documentation index, so you can see where each dimension is strong or thin. Green is higher, red is lower, on whichever metric is selected.
Aggregate only

What does the heatmap show?
Each bubble is a city within the county you choose. The bubble's size reflects how many licensed contractors of the selected trade are based there, and its color reflects a compliance metric you pick: bonding rate, active workers' compensation rate, median license tenure, or an overall documentation index. It's a proportional bubble chart, not a geographic map.
What is the documentation index?
A 0–100 composite of how completely a city's contractors document their compliance: contractor bond on file, a documented workers' compensation status (active coverage or a filed exemption), and license tenure. It measures documentation completeness from public records, not work quality, safety, or risk.
Where does the data come from?
Every figure is summarized from the public California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) records for the selected county and classification. It is a neutral, aggregate public-records view, not a ranking or endorsement of any contractor.
